Go to any screen where quit dialog is invoked when hitting Quit button or window close button.

You have two choices:

Yes - the installer quits and the process is stopped as expected.

No/hitting Esc/closing via cross - installer window disappears so no more action could be taken, installer process is still alive though and one must kill it in terminal.
