Problem Statement
When a user opens the notification panel and there are no new notifications, the "No Notifications Available" message and its accompanying icon are currently aligned to the top-left of the panel. This off-center alignment creates an unbalanced and less polished visual experience, especially for a state that users will frequently encounter. The problem being solved is to improve the aesthetic consistency and visual appeal of the empty notification state, contributing to a more refined and professional user interface.
User Experience & Workflow
- A user is logged into Red Hat Satellite.
- The user clicks on the "bell" icon (notifications icon) in the top-right corner of the header.
- The notification panel slides open.
- Scenario: There are no active or new notifications for the user.
- Current Outcome: The "No Notifications Available" text and the large "information" icon are displayed, but they are positioned towards the bottom-center of the notification panel, leaving a large empty space above.
- Proposed Outcome: The "No Notifications Available" text and the large "information" icon will be horizontally and vertically centered within the notification panel. This provides a clean, balanced, and visually pleasing empty state.
- The user can verify success by observing the notification panel when no notifications are present; the message and icon should appear perfectly centered.
Requirements
- REQ-001 (MVP): The "No Notifications Available" text string along with large information icon (currently a circle with an 'i') displayed above the "No Notifications Available" text must be horizontally and vertically centered in conjunction with the text.
- REQ-002 (MVP): The centering must be responsive, maintaining correct alignment across different browser window sizes and resolutions.
Business Impact
The absence of this feature does not block any critical functionality, but it does contribute to minor UI inconsistencies. While seemingly small, these visual discrepancies can collectively diminish the perceived quality and attention to detail of the product. Failing to address such aesthetic refinements can subtly impact user satisfaction and the overall professional image of Red Hat Satellite. There would be no direct negative impact on specific Red Hat projects, but it represents a missed opportunity to deliver a more polished and user-friendly interface that aligns with high-quality software standards.
