      Definition of Done:

Please mark each item below with ( / ) if completed or ( x ) if incomplete:

( ) The acceptance criteria defined below are met.

Given a system administrator initializing a network interface on a cluster environment,

When the system assigns names during boot/configuration,

Then Nmstate should allow an administrator-defined “alt-name” in addition to the canonical interface name.

( ) Integration test case is available upstream

( ) Code changes is reviewed and merged

( ) Preliminary testing is done

( ) Upstream documentation is written in the upstream MR.

( ) Release notes text is written in the RHEL issue.

      ( ) A demo is recorded

Achieve consistent interface naming across clusters to simplify automation, configuration management, and support processes.

      • Reduce the risk and effort required to support heterogeneous network interface naming across environments.
      • Ensure configurations align with organizational standards, avoiding the need for bespoke solutions.

With alternative interface naming, the kernel can assign additional names to network interfaces. You can use these alternative names in the same way as the normal interface names in commands that require a network interface name.

It would be best from a user experience perspective if we could consolidate all networking configurations via NetworkManager/nmstate, including in the network-config configuration YAML section at IPI installer or AgentConfig CR in the Agent-based Installer.
