Workaround: Log into Nexus (<nexus-vm>:8081/nexus/ - username admin, password admin123) and in the list of Repositories, right click all Proxy repos, selecting "Block Proxy". That should disable any upstream checks and force Nexus to serve whatever is currently in the cache.

Description: (could affect all Java-based courses, hence the missing VM URL in workaround)

If, for any reason, your Maven builds are sloooooooooooow (download rates anything below 100s of KB/s), chances are your Nexus is thinking it should check the upstream repositories for latest available information on packages.

The default configuration should probably be to block proxies anyway.
