Workaround: In the RHEL 7.x timeframe, I'd expect that authconfig will be supported but deprecated, so the instructions should still work in the short/medium run.

Description: In Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4, while authconfig is still supported, it is now on the deprecated packages list. The expectation is that it will be replaced by authselect, which uses profiles to manage PAM configuration files rather than simply editing them.

This affects Chapter 8 "CONNECTING TO NETWORK-DEFINED USERS AND GROUPS", which is heavily based on the authconfig approach.   I believe that the sssd profile of authselect can be used to do everything or almost everything that we're doing in this chapter.  We should consider migrating to the new solution at the next minor update with the expectation that we will have to by the next major update of RHEL.
