Description: The Extract Files from an Archive section mentions the -p option to preserve the original permissions. The root user has this turned on by default actually. The example doesn't need to add -p here. It only makes sense for standard users.
The Extract a Compressed Archive section should make it a bit more clear that tar in needed to create a compressed archive of multiple files such as a directory full of files. gzip, bzip2 and xz can only operate on single files.
