      Workaround:

Description: Opening the terminal window as indicated in step 2 (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) is essential for this lab. If you simply right-click the desktop and choose "Open in Terminal" then the lab doesn't perform as expected.

If students (or the instructor) right-clicks the desktop and chooses "Open in Terminal", then the output of step 3.2 "echo $PATH" is:
      /usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin

This will be the same output in step 4.3. If students open the terminal with Applications > Utilities > Terminal, then the lab works as expected.

Alternatively, if students do right-click the desktop and choose "Open in Terminal" they can switch to student with "su - student". At that point, they have the directories as the output of "echo $PATH" from Applications > Utilities > Terminal ... with the exception that they don't have /sbin. Something definitely seems wrong with this behavior.
