Several HAC services (App Studio, HAC Build Services) use ‘Applications’ as the main object which users interact with, that can represent a set of components (often microservices) that they may be building or deploying.

This design allows users to move between these applications without navigating out to a list view of all applications. It is heavily based on the HAC ‘workspace switcher,’ (PD-1372) which allows users to move between workspace contexts, mostly from the breadcrumb area. 

A notable difference between the workspace switcher and the application switcher, is that though they use the same UI paradigms, the workspace switcher is the only way to set the workspace context, whereas the application switcher is for convenience (the user can otherwise navigate to the application list to change application they are viewing.)
