      Epic Overview

Provide power monitoring metrics for hosts and VMs on dashboards integrated into the Console UI like our other telemetry-operator dashboards.

      Goals

Customers will be benefit from visibility of power consumption metrics along side our other packaged dashboarsd.

      Requirements

A list of specific needs or objectives that a Epic must deliver to satisfy the Feature.. Some requirements will be flagged as MVP. If an MVP gets shifted, the epic shifts.  If a non MVP requirement slips, it does not shift the epic.

      requirement Notes is Mvp?
      Display Kepler (VM) metrics   Yes
      Display Ceilometer IPMI metrics   Yes
Have a way to roll-up consumption to totals This may fit well onto an existing dashboard, or could entail a new "Power Overview" type dashboard No

      Out of Scope

      • Collection of any additional metrics beyond those already collected by Ceilometer/Kepler and delivered by telemetry-operator
      • Visualizations in any system other than the OCP Console UI

      Background, and strategic fit

The metrics in question are newly added and not currently represented anywhere. This work is part of an overall strategic Outcome identified in the OSP Q1 QBR to add power consumption monitoring across our portfolio. More details on the background and rationale can be found in the link to additional resources here linked to the Outcome: https://issues.redhat.com/browse/OBSDA-614

      Assumptions

      • Testing environments are available that can provide the required IPMI metrics
      • Metrics collected by ceilometer IPMI and Kepler are sufficient to meet the requirements of the Outcome
      • All other dependent work with respect to delivering Kepler will be complete by the time these visualization components ship

      Customer Considerations

      • We must consider the granularity of the presented visualizations and ensure that they are not too noisy. For example, per-process power monitoring for every running process would be too much to visualize (let alone other potential problem)
      • Filtering of visualizations may be appropriate to address this if required

        Documentation Considerations

      • Release notes should mention any new dashboards or the addition of the feature to existing ones
      • We should have specific documentation of the hardware required and certified for the IPMI metrics
      • (maybe?) Some of the metrics may require some interpretation or conceptual content to clarify the meaning and how they should be used. If necesarry, draft content of this sort will be developed alongside this Epic and provided to the docs team.

      Interoperability Considerations

There are no interoperability concerns with respect to these dashboards.
