    Description

      Strategic Value:
Although OADP currently supports CSI snapshots through the Velero CSI plugin, some snapshots reside on storage that is local to the OpenShift cluster. In the event of a failure, accidental deletion, corruption, or disaster, etc., these snapshots are no longer recoverable. The OADP 1.1 Data Mover solution integrates (and leverages) VolSync (during installation of the OADP operator), thus enabling customers to back up CSI volume* snapshots to, and restore snapshots from, a remote location (i.e. S3 object storage), thus providing customers with snapshot portability and durability.

*Data Mover supports back up and restore of CSI volume snapshots only.

      Documentation Impact:

      • concept information that briefly outlines the advantages of the Data Mover solution (i.e. What is it? Why use it?) and that the data mover plugin is installed with the OADP Operator by default.
      • task information that informs the customer how to back up CSI volume* snapshots to, and restore snapshots from, a remote location (on S3 object storage): i.e., the customer sets a configuration value in the Data Protection Application (DPA) Custom Resources (CR) file before creating a backup/restore, as well as setting storage/volumesnapshot classes.
      • task information that informs the customer how to "opt out" of the data mover plugin, with either of the following methods:
        (a) after OADP is deployed but before creating the the Data Protection Application Custom Resources (DPA CR): specific implementation method TBD
        (b) after the Data Protection Application Custom Resources (DPA CR) is created by setting the `enableDataMover: true` flag (in the DPA CR) to `enableDataMover: false`. Note this configuration update functions similar to other DPA CR configuration values (such as `enableRestic`).
