The IRestClient is not very straightforward, cannot be used to easily access arbitrary node content, and is incomplete (it doesn't have a way to easily upload or download files). This really makes it difficult to write Java client applications.
Any changes really need to be done as additions (or a completely separate framework), because we cannot change the existing methods without breaking existing clients.
I also don't know if it's possible to do this in the 2.2.x branch, as it may turn out to be a fairly big effort.
