Background
Ensuring data integrity and availability is crucial in OpenShift environments, especially for hosted control planes (HCP). The Etcd cluster, being the primary data store for all objects, is a critical component that requires robust backup and restore procedures.
This spike aims to investigate the feasibility and the different approaches towards documenting or building Etcd backup and restore flows for on-prem self-managed hosted control planes.
Tasks for this spike include:
- Documentation Feasibility: Explore the current state of etcd backup and restore procedures in the docs and understand the diffs to reproduce for the rest of the providers.
- Technical Feasibility of Building Backup and Restore Flows: Evaluate the technical feasibility and requirements for building automated backup and restore flows for etcd within on-prem self-managed hosted control planes environments.
The outcome of this spike should provide a clear understanding of the feasibility, benefits, and challenges associated with documenting or building Etcd backup and restore flows for self-managed on-prem hosted control planes.
