Background:

• Image updater is a project created by jfischer@redhat.com and introduced to the upstream Argo community via Argo Proj Labs
• It currently doesn't have any other maintainers or a roadmap
• There have been discussions in the Argo CD community about merging it into core for a long time, but no movement from reviewers to make it happen
• The OpenShift GitOps team sees this project as an important addition, bringing image updating capabilities to Argo CD in a gitops-friendly way
• OpenShift GitOps customers have workarounds for this lack of support today, but we would like to bring it into the operator as a first-class citizen

Objectives

• Incorporate Image Updater project into OpenShift GitOps
• Stabilise the upstream project and have a plan for ongoing maintenance
• Establish Image Updater as a gitops-friendly option instead of Image Streams

Timeline

• Complete the future planning and stabilisation of the upstream project by the end of Q3 '24
• Provide image updater to OpenShift GitOps customers by the end of Q4 '24
• Review at the end of each quarter
