We want to be able to provide as much automation with respect to network configuration as possible, while also utilizing the best features available in both plain vanilla kubernetes as well as openshift.
In particular when on openshift we can create routes for incoming traffic that configure the openshift router. This does not exist by default in a plain vanilla kubernetes installation, instead we need to configure network ingress differently.
As a precursor to such functionality we need detection of the environment being run so we can provide different configurations appropriately.
