1. Proposed title of this feature request
Support RHEL 8 server worker/infra nodes
2. Who is the customer behind the request?
N/A
3. What is the nature and description of the request?
Support for RHEL 8 server worker/infra nodes is a common question we get from our customers. Since many large enterprise clusters deploy on-premise clusters to disconnected environments, they often have their processes for provisioning and securing the operating system. They would like to continue leveraging their own well established process for maintaining and managing their environment including their OpenShift worker nodes.
In addition, the existing process for updating RHEL 7 server worker nodes is a disparate process from the standard cluster update process. With support for RHEL 8 server, there should be tighter integration into the MCO node update process for handling the upgrading of cluster node components.
4. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)
Even though RHEL CoreOS is based on the same code/packages as RHEL 8 server., it can be difficult for customer to integrate with their specialized provisioning tooling. This can be especially challenging when integrating RHEL CoreOS with their security and monitoring agents/software that is often a corporate mandate to run on all nodes with application workloads.
7. Is there already an existing RFE upstream or in Red Hat Bugzilla?
No.
8. Does the customer have any specific timeline dependencies and which release would they like to target (i.e. RHEL5, RHEL6)?
OpenShift 4.x
9. Is the sales team involved in this request and do they have any additional input?
No
10. List any affected packages or components.
openshift-ansible, MCO, and potentially UX
11. Would the customer be able to assist in testing this functionality if implemented?
Yes
