[Dual stream] Support two major versions of RHEL CoreOS in a single CNV release & cluster

XMLWordPrintable

    • Support two major versions of RHEL CoreOS in a single CNV
    • CNV-40042 - RHEL 10 and RHEL 9 RHCOS support starting OCP 4.22
    • CNV-40042RHEL 10 and RHEL 9 RHCOS support starting OCP 4.22

      Goal

According to OCPSTRAT-1150 OpenShift Clusters can be installed with RHCOS 9.6 or RHCOS 10.0 as the base image and Clusters can have varying versions of RHCOS in different machineconfigpools of the same cluster.

      User Stories

      • As an Admin, I would like to install CNV on a cluster using nodes certified for RHEL 9 and/or RHEL 10, so that I can utilize my hardware certified only for RHEL 9 xor RHEL 10.

      Non-Requirements

      • List of things not included in this epic, to alleviate any doubt raised during the grooming process.

      Notes

      • "Ideally you'd be able to produce one build that intelligently degrades functionality as your product begins to depend on RHEL10 host features. If that's not feasible there are options to explore like multi-stage builds that intelligently use rhel9 or rhel10 binaries based on the host OS or potentially even producing unique images for the two OSes and figuring out how to ensure that the right container runs on the right host. At this time I don't think OCP is going to pursue a solution to target containers matching the host OS but if that looks like the best option for CNV lets talk more."
