Documentation improvement to include details for replicationFactor

XMLWordPrintable

    • Tracing Sprint # 259, Tracing Sprint # 260, Tracing Sprint # 261

      The documentation Introduction to TempoStack configuration parameters includes a parameter replicationFactor with no details around it such as what exactly it does.

      Anyone will assume that it's for specifying the replicas for each and every component let's say if you specify 3 replicas then there will be 3 pods for gateway, ingester, etc. However, when we check the upstream documentation we can see the following statement and that too for ingester only and there's no instance wide replicationFactor upstream just like Red Hat provided operator.

      --> number of replicas of each span to make while pushing to the backend

      --> https://grafana.com/docs/tempo/latest/configuration/#:~:text=ring%3A%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%23-,number%20of%20replicas,-of%20each%20span

      It will be helpful for customer if documentation can be updated to include detailed info for that parameter to avoid any confusion whether it's for component replicas or number of replicas of each trace segment stored across the Tempo cluster.
