The documentation Configuring SMTP Variables (Optional) explains which are the expected values to be specified in system-secret. However it is not clear which variables are mandatory, i.e. "domain". 

Also seems that Authentication can be optional as per this KCS: Configure SMTP server with no authentication to 3scale.

The request is to make it clear which variables are mandatory and which optional.
