With recent kernels it is possible to improve the performance of pods that transmit lots of small UDP packets by allowing multiple packets to traverse the kernel network stack as a single large aggregate packet.
More details in this blog post. The graphs there are for bare metal, and the performance improvements are not as impressive in virtualized/cloud environments (more like 1.3x rather than 2x), but it's still an improvement.
