WiX, the toolset we use to build the Windows installer, has recently changed its licensing model, which is effective starting with WiX v6 (released in April 2025). The new Open Source Maintenance Fee requires organizations that use WiX to become a sponsor.

This issue is to evaluate how we can move forward, and in particular:

• Look at becoming a sponsor (CNCF or Red Hat)
• Look at the alternatives (adoption, maturity, activity, licensing, features): NSIS, Inno Setup, Squirrel.Windows...
