      1. Use of GitOps and other Red Hat automation products for deployment and management of RHOSO
      2. A feature request to help provide guidance and feedback from customers, both internal and external, about how existing Red Hat products can be combined into a solution for deployment and management of RHOSO within the OpenShift ecosystem.
      3. Deployment and management of a single RHOSO environment is possible, but scaling out to more than one environment can be a potential challenge. Even single environments that are relatively large can easily become cumbersome to manage through the entire lifecycle. This Feature Request is about the use of existing products to provide a solution for a more controlled and secure managed deployment of RHOSO at the customers site.
      4. RHOSO is the target product, in combination with other Red Hat products within the OpenShift Ecosystem to develop a robust solution for the management and deployment of one or multiple deployed environments.

      Feature Overview
      This feature aims to improve the consistency and automation of RHOSO deployments and updates across different environments (dev, stage, and production) using a GitOps deployment strategy. By leveraging Git as the source of truth, this feature will streamline infrastructure changes and ensure consistency in updates and deployments.

      GitOps will provide real-time insights, faster recovery from incidents, reduce operational costs, and ensure consistent application of desired configurations across environments, which is critical for complex systems like OpenStack and OpenShift.

      Goals

      • Increased Visibility & Control: Allow cloud administrators to have better visibility into deployments, enabling proactive management and quicker resolution of infrastructure issues.
      • Faster Incident Response & Recovery: Enable faster rollbacks or corrective updates via GitOps, improving system recovery.
      • Reduced Operational Costs: Automation of deployment processes and security updates will lower operational costs.
      • Enhanced Consistency Across Environments: Ensure configuration consistency across dev, stage, and production environments using Git as the source of truth.

      User documentation is created to include step-by-step setup for the GitOps pipeline and deployment procedures

      Use Cases

      1. Cloud Administrator - GitOps Installation
        As a cloud administrator, I would like to install RHOSO in a dev environment using GitOps and promote this environment to stage and production after successful validation.
      1. Cloud Administrator - GitOps Updates
        As a cloud administrator, I would like to update RHOSO in the dev environment, test the changes, and then promote the updates to stage and production environments using GitOps.
      1. Infrastructure Consistency
        By utilizing GitOps, administrators can ensure that all environments (dev, stage, production) maintain consistent configurations, reducing the chance of configuration drift.

      Out of Scope

      • Manual installation or updates outside of the GitOps workflow.
      • Management of non-GitOps-related security tools.

      Background and Strategic Fit

      • Strategic Fit: GitOps aligns with the strategy of automating deployments and ensuring consistency across environments, reducing manual overhead and operational costs. It is crucial for scaling infrastructure efficiently in complex cloud environments like OpenStack and OpenShift.

      Assumptions

      • Environments (dev, stage, production) may have different configurations and hardware specifications.
      • A tool like will be used to to overlay environment-specific settings for different deployments like development, staging, and production.
      • Prerequisites for GitOps (Git repository, OpenShift ArgoCD, etc.) are set up prior to implementation.

      Customer Considerations

      • Customers should have a predefined GitOps pipeline for deploying RHOSO across environments.
      • Ensure compatibility with existing hardware and software in customer environments.
      • Clear upgrade paths must be defined to allow seamless transitions across OpenStack versions.

      • New Content: User documentation for setting up GitOps pipelines for RHOSO deployment and updates.
