In the instructions, the image is downloaded without a .gz extension, and not decompressed. I assume that decompression is not implicit, so there should be a step to call gunzip or zcat to get an uncompressed image.

(I have not verified if the steps as published actually work, it was hard enough to produced the AMI image as-is.)
