Upstream description:

Support for this optimization was merged recently. Sadly, no automated tests cover it, so it's very easy to regress, even functionally. We should have a large workflow with liger kernels enabled.

Note: other optimizations like dolomite also lack CI coverage. These are out of scope for this bug. (Dolomite specifically may not be worth looking at since Liger are presumed to replace it and it has some issues with latest python 3.12+ support.)
