Currently GCC Toolset (GTS) appears and disappears from the RHEL Universal Base Image (UBI) container depending on a set of varying transient dependencies. This appearance and disappearance of the component can be confusing and misleading for users of UBI including RHEL customers. GCC Toolset is required by LLVM Toolset and the use of LLVM technology in existing components deployed via UBI.
Additionally, including GTS by default would also bring value to customers as it allows them to use the latest version (not 6 months out of date) of the toolset when it is released. Customers have the option of sticking with the long term stability of the system version of GCC and related tools or using the more recent versions of the toolset. The nature of containers lends itself to moving to newer versions of the toolset at a faster pace than traditional development models so it would make business sense to make this available to customers at the earliest opportunity.
