      Description

Filesystem metadata has a high degree of redundancy, so should compress well in the general case. Being able to compress metadata will provide a significant improvement in image size for images with large numbers of smaller files.

In order for this to be implemented, there will have to be updated to both the kernel and userland packages which build the images.

We believe that the upstream developers are happy to accept such a feature, and it may indeed already be something that is being worked on.

This is not something that is particularly urgent, but it is a "nice to have" so I'm creating this epic so we can track any updates on this topic.
