Exploring the Apps menu in RHEL 10, the organisation is a bit odd, which can lead to an unpredictable and sometimes underwhelming experience.
- Settings is found in the "Other" category, which only contains a single launcher
- Sound & Video only contains a single app (Camera)
- Internet only contains a single app (Firefox)
- Graphics only containsn a single app (Image Viewer)
- It's hard to know which apps will be in Accessories and which will be in Utilities. For example, Accessories contains Clocks and Text Editor. Utilities includes Calculator and Characters.
A proposal to improve this situation:
- Move Settings to System Tools
- Move all the apps out of the Sound & Video and Graphics categories
- Move Extensions to System Tools - to keep it alongside the other software install and settings apps
- Shuffle the Utilities and Accessories categories, so that the more essential built-in tools are in Utilities and the more optional apps are in Accessories.
The specific changes would be:
- Settings: Other → System Tools
- Extensions: Accessories → System Tools
- Brasero: Sound & Video → Accessories
- Volume Control: Sound & Video → System Tools
- Snapshot: Sound & Video → Accessories
- Image Viewer: Graphics → Utilities
- Text Editor: Accessories → Utilities
- Calculator: Utilities → Accessories
- Characters: Utilities → Accessories
- Files: Accessories → Utilities
The one thing this doesn't fix is the single app in Internet by default. I'm not sure what we can do about that.
