Our team (sst_dotnet) owns lttng-ust in RHEL 10. We own it because .NET needs this package. lttng-ust is a required build time dependency of .NET, and an optional runtime dependency.

As far as we can tell, there's no current package or workload in RHEL 10 that (hard-) needs lttng-ust at runtime. All dependencies on it are optional or build-time only. Every package that we decide to ship in RHEL 10 (BaseOS or AppStream) will essentially require us to maintain and support it for at least 10 years.

Additionally, we are far from experts in lttng-ust. We are not really equipped to fix issues in it. And we almost no idea how to do that without breaking compatibility.

To reduce our maintenance and support burden, we should consider moving the lttng-ust package to CRB. The only major difference from a user's point of view would be that:

      • lttng-ust is not supported (it's available in CRB repos, even possibly in UBI)
      • lttng-ust might be rebased to a higher version at any time

The lttng-ust-devel subpackage is alerady in CRB.
