1. Proposed title of this feature request: Add 'bcvk' to the bootc package ecosystem
2. Who is the customer behind the request?: JP Morgan Chase
Account: name and acct : JP Morgan Chase #334224
TAM customer: yes
CSM customer: -
Strategic: -
3. What is the nature and description of the request?:
Requesting the packaging and inclusion of bcvk (bootc virtualization kit) for RHEL via the Red Hat repositories.
4. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)
As per customer:
- Seems like an essential bit of development tooling for bootc development/testing.
- Given we are a controlled environment, downloading from github and running the cargo build is not a viable installation method for us.
5. How would the customer like to achieve this? (List the functional requirements here)
- Availability of the bcvk package via Red Hat repositories.
6. For each functional requirement listed, specify how Red Hat and the customer can test to confirm the requirement is successfully implemented.
- Verify Package Availability by querying the Red Hat repositories.
- Validate Installation Integrity by installing the RPM via dnf and checking that all dependencies are automatically resolved.
- Perform a Functional Test by using bcvk to launch a standard bootc container image
7. Is there already an existing RFE upstream or in Red Hat Bugzilla?
Yes:
"bcvk is shipped in Fedora (including EPEL)"
https://issues.redhat.com/browse/BIFROST-951
8. Does the customer have any specific timeline dependencies and which release would they like to target (i.e. RHEL8, RHEL9)?
- N/A
Customer has been informed that there are plans to include bcvk upstream and since Red Hat incorporates features from upstream, the current upstream status of bcvk prevents its inclusion at this stage. Therefore, we are unable to provide an ETA.
9. Is the sales team involved in this request and do they have any additional input?
N/A
10. List any affected packages or components:
- bcvk
- bootc
11. Would the customer be able to assist in testing this functionality if implemented?:
Yes
