Factory reset feature is available as technology preview::
The factory reset feature is available in image mode as technology preview. By using the bootc install reset command, you can performs a non-destructive factory reset of an existing bootc system. This creates a fresh installation state in a new stateroot but preserves the existing system's files on disk. After rebooting into the new deployment, you can still access the old system's data by examining files in /sysroot/ostree/deploy/<old-stateroot>/.

Another big fix related to this too will be https://github.com/containers/bootc/issues/22 which will help split up "config" into individual pieces instead of a large bucket.

There is https://github.com/containers/bootc/issues/404 tracking this now and we already have some work that landed towards this using stateroots.
