- Bug summary
-
GNOME uses sound to notify user in several circumstances (system alert, removable media plugged/unplugged, PSU plugged/unplugged, volume change). Some of these events are audio only - there is no visual alternative for unplugging removable media and plugging/unplugging power supply. Thus people with hearing disabilities have no way to get know that something happened.
-
-
- Steps to reproduce
-
1. Log in to GNOME.
2. Try to unplug a removable media (e.g. USB disk).
3. If using a laptop (or another battery powered device), try to plug/unplug an external power supply.
-
-
- What happened
-
Notification sound is played for each event, but the user got no visual message about what happened.
-
-
- What did you expect to happen
-
GNOME Shall should provide a visual alternative for the audio-only event announcement.
-
-
- Relevant logs, screenshots, screencasts etc.
-
NOTE: There is a battery icon change in system tray when plugging/unplugging the power supply. But this change is too small (not sufficient) to be safely noticed.
Section 508, criterion 502.4 declares:
Platforms and platform software shall conform to the requirements in ANSI/HFES 200.2, Human Factors Engineering of Software User Interfaces — Part 2: Accessibility (2008) ... listed below:
- ...
- Section 10.6.7 Allow users to choose visual alternative for audio output;
Where 10.6.7 is described as:
If the hardware supports both audio and visual output, platform software should enable users to choose to have task relevant audio output (including alerts) presented in visual form, auditory form or both together, and software running on such systems should support those options.
NOTE: This is commonly called ShowSounds ...
As a part of Section 508 criteria, this is important for Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs).
