I have a brand new Macbook on which I want to install RHDM:

      I installed Oracle JDK 1.8
I used the EAP installer to install EAP 7.1, selecting default configurations.
I used the DM installer to install RHDM, selecting default configs apart from the install directory, for which I used (userhome)/EAP-7.1.0...

Install failed, and automatically rolled back. See attached screenshot and installation log file.

Seems to me that the installer was attempting to modify EAP server logs, which of course don't exist since EAP has never been run.

If that's the case - why would it be trying to do that? I would expect that server logs would be locked down on production systems anyway.
