Description
The client has a very particular use case. Client builds OCP clusters in a box to be used in isolated, particular environments like
- cell boxes
- airplanes
- ships
Some of these locations have no DNS support at all, so we are requested to provide means for this kind of use cases, suggested by client:
- static hostnames
- static config
- supported /etc/hosts customization
By CU own words:
What problem/issue/behavior are you having trouble with? What do you expect to see?
- We'd like to know if we can set static hostnames.
- If we can set the DNS to the internal OpenShift DNS server after the installation
Hi,
We install OpenShift on our internal installation network and send the platform to our customers after the installation. This means that the installation DNS is not available at the customer side.
We have currently two issues with this...
1/ Our system sometimes doesn't get the correct hostname. Is fine that we set a static hostname?
We found this verified solution, but we want to double-check if we're allowed to do this.

2/ It doesn't seem to be possible to set static hostnames as part of the OpenShift installer.
Is this correct? If not possible can we open a change request to implement it?
3/ DNS, The installation DNS isn't available we the platform is used by the customer.
We the platform boot sometimes we have the issue that the API isn't resolved and the Kubelet service fails to start.
What is the recommended way to get around this? We see two solutions
- Add the API server IP to the DNS server on the platform, so we use the internal OpenShift DNS server.
Is this supported?
- Add an entry with the API server to /etc/hosts
Is this supported?
Or is this another supported way to get around this?
What is the business impact? Please also provide timeframe information.
