      Goal
Provide the ability to show either the cluster domain or display name.

Take into consideration how the multi-cluster switcher impacts this when ACM installed, as well as the fact that the side navigation can be collapsed.

      Background

Often times, Ops/SRE teams manage apps across multiple clusters. We try to use the APIs and automation as much as possible but there are many cases where using the web console is faster and simpler.

When working on multiple clusters at once, it is not always easy to tell which cluster console is which. Often times, the DNS name in the browser URL bar is very similar and doesn't tell much about the cluster.

Today, the console UI does not show the cluster ID/name/FQDN in a way that it remains visible regardless of what console page you are on. This is a request to add such a capability to the console.

      To do

      • Confirm what information to show when:
        • When ACM is installed show the display name? Confirm that the display name will replace the domain name when ACM is installed.
        • When ACM is not installed show the domain name? For the domain name the console team recommends not surfacing the entire API url. Show: kjeeyar-aug2421.devcluster.openshift.com, instead of: https://console-openshift-console.apps.kjeeyar-aug2421.devcluster.openshift.com
      • Leverage the cluster switcher design as much as possible as not to create another way to display identifying cluster information. This is an opportunity to learn where users can find domain name information even when ACM is not installed.
      • In addition, there could be an opportunity to encourage ACM to be installed. Michael's designs show that in the design proposal - I think we would just switch the display name to the domain name in that instance until ACM is installed.
      • Take into consideration that the domain name can be much longer than a display name
