OpenShift Service Mesh 3.1 updates the status of Istio ambient mode to Technology Preview. Istio's ambient mode provides a sidecar-less alternative data plane to Istio's traditional sidecar based data plane. With ambient mode, the data plane is split into node-level L4 ZTunnels and namespace (by default) scoped L7 Waypoint proxies.

As Istio ambient mode requires the use of Kubernetes Gateway API CRDs, it is recommended to use OpenShift Container Platform 4.19 or later which includes these by default.

To avoid potential conflicts, install Istio ambient mode only on clusters that do not have an existing Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh installation.
Istio ambient mode is not compatible with clusters that use Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh 2.6 or earlier.

To get started with Istio ambient mode, follow the Istio ambient mode guide in the installation section of the OpenShift Service Mesh documentation.

Following on from OSSM-3371, this epic is a catch all for ambient related work that goes beyond the scope of developer preview.

The minimum requirements for the TP of the Istio Ambient mode:

      • Istio Ambient productization
      • Documentation of Istio Ambient mode (install / management / uninstall)
      • Istio Ambient working state on Openshift cluster
      • Istio Ambient mode in Sail Operator (deploy / control / management)

      This could include:

      • Productizing Z-tunnel, including OpenSSL.
      • Sail operator enhancements beyond community support (dev preview)
      • Zero down-time upgrade functionality needed to support production users:
      • High-availability support for Z-tunnel:
      • Other upstream work related to stabilizing ambient mode for OpenShift users who require production grade support.
      • Initial ambient mode product documentation
