This issue is to review existing documentation around Egress Gateways ("Directing outbound traffic through an egress gateway" and make any necessary updates for Istio ambient mode. In discussions during the team call on Sept 23, it was said that this is different for ambieint vs sidecar mode.

This impacts [Chapter 3 - Directing outbound traffic through a gateway | https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_openshift_service_mesh/3.1/html/gateways/ossm-directing-outbound-traffic-through-a-gateway].

Consider that workloads may be in one of:

      • sidecar mode
      • ambient with a z-tunnel only
      • ambient with a z-tunnel + waypoint

The documentation should address all of those potential scenarios.

From an engineering standpoint, the output of this issue is a draft of the modifications needed to the above linked product doc, that can be picked up and delivered by the docs team.
