Maven 3.9 will start to interpret MAVEN_ARGS as additional command-line arguments. This may clash with our use of the variable to do much the same thing.

We don't ship 3.9 yet but depending on how we want to resolve this, we may need to begin the process of deprecation etc as early as possible.
