Feature Overview
This feature enhances the user experience of the Assisted Installer by removing "Tech Preview" and "Dev Preview" labels from stable operator and operator bundles, establishing a clear, data-driven framework for graduating all operators to a fully supported status. This change will provide administrators with greater clarity and confidence when selecting additional capabilities during OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) cluster installation.
Goals
- Improve User Clarity: Simplify the operator selection screen to clearly distinguish between Dev/Tech preview and fully supported operators.
- Establish a Formal Graduation Process: Create and document a standardized policy that defines the criteria for an operator to move from a preview state to General Availability (GA) within the Assisted Installer.
The primary user for this feature is the Cluster Administrator deploying OCP clusters via the Assisted Installer. This feature expands on the existing operator selection functionality in the installation wizard.
Requirements
Functional Requirements:
- Immediate Bundle Graduation:
-
- The "Tech Preview" or "Dev Preview" labels must be removed from the OpenShift Virtualization and OpenShift AI bundles in the Assisted Installer UI.
- Operator Graduation Framework Definition (existing and new operators):
-
- A formal policy for graduating individual operators from Dev Preview to Tech Preview to GA will be defined and documented.
- This policy must be based on specific, measurable criteria. A proposed starting point to be refined is:
- Minimum time available in Dev/Tech Preview (e.g., 4 weeks).
- A minimum installation success rate (e.g., 80%) measured by the Assisted Installer team.
-
- The policy must define the process and cadence for re-evaluating operators that do not meet the graduation criteria (e.g., "re-evaluate in x weeks").
- The Assisted Installer team will own the policy, the success rate measurement process, and the final approval for graduating an operator.
- UI Implementation:
-
- Operators and bundles that are considered GA (fully supported) shall not display any status label. The absence of a label signifies a supported status.
- Operators and bundles that have not met the graduation criteria will continue to display the appropriate "Tech Preview" or "Dev Preview" label.
User Scenario
As a Cluster Administrator using the Assisted Installer to deploy a new OpenShift cluster, I want to understand which operators are fully supported.
