    Description

      BU Priority Overview

Enable installation and lifecycle support of OpenShift 4 on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS)

      Goals

      • Validating OpenShift on OCVS to make it officially supported.
      • Enable installation of OpenShift 4 on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) using currently supported install methods.
      • OpenShift 4 on OCVS can be updated that results in a cluster and applications that are in a healthy state when update is completed.
      • Telemetry reports back on clusters using OpenShift 4 on OCVS for connected OpenShift clusters (e.g. platform=vsphere + some other indicator to know it's running on OCVS).

      State of the Business

      • OCVS essentially, is hardware provided by Oracle, customer manages the vSphere layer and up, i.e. OCVS provides root access to all VMware API layers. If customer wants, they can even re-install vSphere. The API's at the vSphere level (in OCVS) should be the exact same as OpenShift has already validated with vSphere - this has been confirmed by VMware.
      • On paper OpenShift on OCVS will work as-is with OpenShift on vSphere today, but this specific integration with OCVS itself has not yet been tested by our team, nor have we evaluated this scenario thoroughly. If OCVS leverages vSphere APIs without modifying any of the vSphere APIs and meets OCP requirements, then we believe running OpenShift on OCVS should be no different from running OpenShift on any other tested and supported vSphere environments, since OCP's integration is with vSphere, and not with its underlying platform.
      • There are some production customers already but validation comes in lots of opportunities and will help lower the friction to adoption.
      • VMware does publish in https://cloud.vmware.com/providers/cloud-providers/oracle that Oracle Cloud VMware Solution is VMware Cloud Verified.

      Why is this important

      • OCVS is starting to gain momentum and there is growing customer interest.
      • In the Middle East (e.g. Saudi Arabia), only Oracle Cloud and Alibaba Cloud are approved hyperscalars.

      Requirements

      • This Section:* A list of specific needs or objectives that a Feature must deliver to satisfy the Feature.. Some requirements will be flagged as MVP. If an MVP gets shifted, the feature shifts. If a non MVP requirement slips, it does not shift the feature.
