In step 1 of the procedure, where it says "determine the date on which certificates expire and run the following command", it must say "determine the date on which certificates expire by running the following command", or something that means the same.

Running the command is what lets you determine the expiry date of the certificate, it is not an additional task besides determining the expiry date.
