Currently we only list release-image.service and bootkube.service in /etc/motd.
cat /etc/motd This is the bootstrap node; it will be destroyed when the master is fully up. The primary services are release-image.service followed by bootkube.service. To watch their status, run e.g. journalctl -b -f -u release-image.service -u bootkube.service
On my setup there was a problem to pull the image, and it was shown in the logs of node-image-pull.service
Jun 05 14:22:32 sno-0-0.snohub-0.qe.lab.redhat.com node-image-pull.sh[6524]: error: Creating importer: failed to invoke method OpenImage: failed to invoke method OpenImage: (Mirrors also fa> Jun 05 14:22:32 sno-0-0.snohub-0.qe.lab.redhat.com node-image-pull.sh[6524]: [registry.snohub-0.qe.lab.redhat.com:5005/openshift-release-dev/ocp-release@sha256:ec16622a2758c7aacfd0467998084> Jun 05 14:22:32 sno-0-0.snohub-0.qe.lab.redhat.com node-image-pull.sh[1906]: Failed to fetch release image; retrying...
I needed to debug it harder to realize it's node-image-pull service to check for logs.
I think we should include node-image-pull in /etc/motd
