vertical-pod-autoscaler-operator relies on a distgit oddity that the git commit is available in the place where the Makefile is being run. This was the case in distgit/brew, but is not anymore in how Konflux builds will be arranged.

Please rely on OS_GIT_VERSION to get the version injected instead in https://github.com/openshift/vertical-pod-autoscaler-operator/blob/release-4.17/Makefile#L5
