Goal: The Observability team's sustainability efforts are focused on delivering power monitoring capabilities that support the company's sustainability efforts by promoting energy-efficient infrastructure/platforms and data-driven decision-making. The launch of these features will help customers and internal teams better measure and optimize the energy consumption of the infrastructure and workloads across cloud and datacenter environments. It will also support AI/ML workloads and Red Hat OpenShift AI platform.

      Key outcomes include:

      1. General Availability of the Power Monitoring:
The Power Monitoring project (based on Kepler)  provides real-time visibility into power consumption metrics, enabling users to track energy usage across clusters and workloads, helping understand and reduce overall energy consumption.
      2. Support for GPU Power Monitoring:
Given the growing interest in GPUs for AI/ML workloads, power monitoring aims to include GPU energy consumption metrics. This allows organizations to optimize GPU utilization and ensure high-performance computing workloads are executed in an energy-efficient manner.
      3. Expanding Power Monitoring to Additional Hardware and Accelerators:
With growing interest in AI platforms we will extend power monitoring capabilities beyond traditional CPUs and GPUs to include specialized hardware accelerators such as FPGAs and TPUs, providing energy usage insights across all types of compute resources.
      4. Exposing Metrics for Data-Driven Decisions:
By exposing power consumption metrics via dashboards and APIs, organizations can leverage sustainability insights to optimize infrastructure and workload deployments based on energy efficiency, driving cost savings and carbon reduction goals.
      5. Supporting Projects (fe: PEAKS, Climatic, Instaslice and Susql):
Observability Sustainability work supports PEAKS (Performance and Energy Analytics for Kubernetes Systems), Climatic (Climate Impact Analysis Tool), and Susql (Sustainability Query Language) to provide deeper analytics, predictive modeling, and query-driven sustainability reporting. These projects enable customers to improve their operations and align with sustainability policies and company sustainability goals.

The Observability team’s sustainability empowers customers to track, optimize, and reduce energy usage across their cloud and on-premise infrastructure. It is aligned with the Red Hat Sustainability initiative led by the Office of CTO aiming to support energy efficiency infrastructure and energy efficient (green) development.
