We noticed in a testing environment that the guest operating system may be missing for VMs from vSphere. Apparently, vSphere stops reporting the operating system after not getting updates from VMware tools for some time.

This can also explain an issue that was reported from the field in which some VMs that were imported from vSphere were not mapped a template in OpenShift while other VMs, with the same guest operating system, were mapped to the corresponding template.

We discussed fixing this issue by consuming the guest operating system from the output of virt-v2v. First, it will address the aforementioned issue. Second, it would work also for VMs that are not installed with VMware tools.
