You are spot on ibolton@redhat.com. This is consistent with our PatternFly guidelines and RH products as well. Apart from the breadcrumbs the user has the ability to use their browser back button to return to the previous screen.

The breadcrumbs act as the back/cancel/close button here. Clicking on applications in the breadcrumb menu will take you back.
