Jackrabbit defined an XML format for defining node types within their configuration files (see http://jackrabbit.apache.org/node-type-notation.html). Although the CND format has now been standardized, there are people trying to convert from Jackrabbit to ModeShape. Having a mechanism that loaded node definitions from Jackrabbit would ease their conversion workload.
