With the removal of Infinispan, ModeShape itself has to be able to integrate with JTA transaction managers in order to correctly handle both user and container managed transactions.

The integration has to take place at a configuration level - i.e. supporting the configuration of custom transaction manager lookups - while also providing a default implementation which works out-of-the-box with most managers and JEE containers.
