Currently JGroups provides byte compatibility between versions on a best-effort basis, with no testing automation in place to verify this. In order for user applications to rely on byte compatibility, it's necessary for JGroups to add a testing matrix to ensure byte compatibility is not broken between releases.

In order for byte compatibility to be guaranteed, user applications must ensure that the protocol's in the JGroups stack are not changed between the different application versions.
