This ticket documents JDG-7544 

"In order to detect and prevent incompatible changes to Infinispan's serialization format, we should convert the internal marshaller to be ProtoStream based. Preventing incompatible changes being merged is a hard requirement for ensuring that clusters of heterogeneous Infinispan versions can continue to form and function as expected, which is necessary in order for zero-downtime upgrades to be supported."
