Xalan has a memory leak in XMLReaderManager, described here: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/XALANJ-2195
Trees of objects are retained in ThreadLocal variables that are never cleaned up, eventually causing the application to run out of memory.
The patch is attached to the XALANJ link and needs to be applied to the version of Xalan used by JBoss.
