We need two sets of interoperability tests.

(1) a set which tests against all prior releases with which it is purported to be compatible
(2) a set which tests implementations against the original serialization libraries which with they are supposed to be compatible

I'd like to use the same TestBase class with additional configurations to make these additional combinations work. Maybe TestNG will be a prereq to make this easier.
